WAR vs WoW: Scenarios vs Battlegrounds

We’ve already seen how Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning seeks to revolutionize the way we PvP with RvR, so it would be expected that WAR will have a new take on World of Warcraft’s battlegrounds. Scenarios will offer more incentive to PvP in other places than in the open world, leading to less ganking for lower level players.

In an effort to better compare these two titles in terms of features, I made the following chart:

*There are 12 scenarios, but a player will not be able to experience them all from one character. There are four scenarios for dwarves/orcs, four for men/chaos, and four for elves/dark elves.

Although the WoW content displayed in the chart is all pre-Wrath of the Lich King, it seems that Warhammer Online one-ups World of Warcraft in the category of instanced PvP. The new modes like bomb, where players rush to the center of the map to pick up a bomb, and then have one minute to deliver it to the enemys base before it explodes, and murderball, where player have to hold on to an artifact until they reach the goal time, look particularly fun and promising. The development team says they are still tweaking and testing the number of players that will be allowed inside the instanced PvP scenarios, but for now it will either be 12 on 12 or 24 on 24.

I only hope all this stuff will actually be in WAR at launch — unlike AoC where a lot of the awesome PVP stuff never made it to launch. :(

Absolutely 100% agreed. The guys in the Warhammer online video podcasts seem a bit too enthusiastic about this stuff for the amount that they’ve shown, however, having played some of this in 1. the beta and 2. at conferences, its already in the game and just being fine tuned.

Totally agree with both of you, I was really looking forward to Age of Conan mostly for their pvp and when it came out i was a little disappointed to say the least. They are just not starting to add everything in, but the new pvp system they have doesn’t look to promising. I’ve recently been checking out Warhammer online and I know from experience that EA Mythic does a great job with their pvp. I played dark age of Camelot and although it started out rough once they got their pvp system down it was great. I believe that the guys and ea mythic will deliver a great game, i’m just counting down the days to open beta/launch so i can really experience everything first hand.

First… as you can see on the maps here [http://warhammer.gamepressure.com/maps.asp] there are about 22 different scenarios. Also, a player may experience all of them just by travelling to the zone in which they are. So if you want to go to a Dwarf scenario being Empire you have to travel to the Dwarven zone and then queue up

I’m a tester and all the PvP is in the game, tested, polished and ready for release, no failcom here :)

This article was written at the time of beta 3.2, so some of the stuff thats now in 4.1 was not yet there. Once Warhammer launches or at least goes into open beta, we’ll do a full report.
